The Players |
|
The players are from all walks of life - some are still at school, while some
of the older ones are seasoned troubadours. They generously give their time
and talent for charitable causes and have performed in many of England's great
country houses, including Audley End Mansion, Badminton, Cranbury Park,
Blenheim Palace, Sledmere, Stanway and Hunsdon House, for the Imperial
Cancer Research Fund.
Over the years, the Orchestra has attracted much exciting local talent to its ranks and performed in many prestigious venues culminating in 1996 with a Young Artistes Showcase at St. John's Smith Square in aid of the Airey Neave Trust. The Orchestra's repertoire has included operas by composers such as Mozart and Rossini as well as more modern works by Dame Ethel Smythe and Lennox Berkeley. A notable early production was Schubert's "The Conspirators", for which George Barker, together with Humphrey Trevelyan, produced the only English version of this masterpiece. The Orchestra's first visit overseas was in 1987 when they went to play in Bad Wildungen in Germany as part of Saffron Walden's Town Twinning celebration. More recently the Orchestra has performed a wide variety of orchestral works, often including concertos with talented young soloists. Some of them are listed on the Archive page. |
